IN THE YEAR 1738,

in Provence

The tale of Le Mas de Chabran starts back in 1738, when the first structure was envisioned as an oil mill with over 300 olive trees adorning its surroundings. This initial setup was crafted for the purpose of producing olive oil, which held significance in the local area. Two substantial oil presses—one of which remains a focal point under the vaults of the living room to this day—played a pivotal role in its functioning. The steady hum of the machinery churning would have echoed through the surroundings as the factory produced the liquid treasure that characterized this region of Provence.

Over time, the house underwent changes and eventually became the main residence of Pierre Chabran—a noble notary from the town of St. Rémy. To him, the property was more than a living space; it was a canvas for his creative ideas. Inspired by French Renaissance gardens, he transformed the olive grove into a jardin à la française, adding an element of elegance and balance to the natural surroundings. The newly designed garden played a significant role in shaping the overall evolution of the house.

Under Pierre’s guidance and supervision, the main building that we now recognize as Le Mas de Chabran came into existence. The residence underwent expansion to include the château-like wing we are familiar with today, characterized by its sophisticated facade and central fountain feature. With its design and noble simplicity, the grand building stands as an emblem of Provence’s timeless elegance. The transformation of the property from an oil mill to a family home underscores the fusion of practicality and aesthetic appeal as it blossomed into a retreat for individuals drawn to the natural beauty of the surroundings and the refined allure of an elegant manor house.

In 2017, after nearly seven years of negotiations, the house came into the hands of Liliana and Alain Meylan, a dynamic duo of interior designer and architect, whose passion for giving life to historical buildings drove them to the life-changing decision of undertaking the challenge of restoring the house to its original magnificence. They saw Le Mas de Chabran as a place that would offer the highest level of comfort, privacy, and luxury to their guests while maintaining as much as possible the original character of the building. Two years later, in 2019, Le Mas de Chabran welcomed its first guests, and the house has continued to evolve and improve since then.

It must be said that this is very much a space that “lives” with its guests, the owners, and the team that so lovingly takes care of it. The collections of art and beautiful objects change often, like friends or guests that come and stay for a while and then say their goodbyes. A place that keeps on surprising, Le Mas has something new to offer returning travelers every time. And if you happen to visit us during the off-season, you will find that there are always candles burning in the entry hall and soft music playing in the background, even when the house is resting.
